On Monday 1st June, Ballina Climate Action Network hosted a film and discussion evening with a screening of Leonardo Di Caprio’s Eleventh Hour.

The film is scientifically accurate but also emotionally confronting, as it presents the science of climate change through the words of a host of eminent scientists, commentators and authors.

"There are obviously many people in Ballina who want to debate the science of climate change" said Sue Fielder, "and perhaps they would also debate the matter of peak oil, though some probably aren't even aware of its existence".

"After the screening some audience members described how, when they present the facts about climate change they are ridiculed as 'rabid greenies' Steve Posselt reported afterwards. "It's ironic that ordinary people who have never considered themselves to be 'green' are finding themselves typecast merely because they accept known science and wish to discuss it".

"Eleventh Hour is much more than a film about climate change or peak oil or anything else of that kind", noted Lee Andresen. "It is about the need for a major philosophical change in how we look at the world and how we live today. Like it or not, that change is going to be thrust upon us because the planet cannot provide the resources that current lifestyles demand. Things are running out and eventually we will all be confronted by that reality".

Post-film discussion, facilitated by Giovanni from the Ebono Institute, culminated in a vote that BCAN should continue to foster regular film and discussion evenings, examining sustainability issues and exploring how we can change our lifestyles to live sustainably".
